Job Description and Duties INDICATE 02-4-287 ON APPLICATION Under the direction of the Caltrans Maintenance Manager I - Region Support, the incumbent is responsible for instruction and training of field maintenance rank and file personnel in all classifications.
Training responsibilities include the proper use, operation, servicing, minor repair and adjustment of automotive and maintenance equipment used in Caltrans maintenance work; Defensive Driver Training for field maintenance; Heat Illness Prevention Training; Valley Fever Awareness Training; Maintenance Employee Safety Orientation; Protection of Workers and Temporary Traffic Control Training; First Aid and CPR; Respiratory Protection; Ladder Safety; Hazardous Incident Communication; Injury and Illness Prevention Program; and other training as required in accordance with District, Department, State and Federal law, policies, rules and guidelines.
The incumbent develops training courses and materials, researches course content and evaluates the performance of students, and will act as Lead Instructor during training sessions at various locations.
The incumbent may also assist the Region Support Manager I with planning, organizing work, and completing reports.
Travel is required.
A valid California Class C driver's license is required when operating a state vehicle.
A Class A is desirable.
Delivers classroom presentations to Caltrans employees on the responsibilities of safe and proper inspection, operation and servicing of, and minor repairs to motorized equipment used in highway maintenance and construction; Defensive Driver Training for Field Maintenance; Heat Illness Prevention Training; Confined Space Training; Fall Protection; Valley Fever Awareness Training; Protection of Workers and Temporary Traffic Control Training; First Aid and CPR; Respiratory Protection; and other training as required by departmental policy and legal mandate.
The majority (approximately 80%) of the training provided will be in person at our maintenance facilities throughout the district and will require travel, including overnight for multiple days at a time.
Tracks and coordinates training records and prepares training reports.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent Exam.

Working Conditions Position located in Redding, Shasta County Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.
During the winter months the workweek is normally 5/8-hour days.
During the summer months the workweeks may be changed to 4/10-hour days.
The scheduling of the 5/8 days or the 4/10 days is at the discretion of the District Management Will be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime.
Personal safety requirements include: A.
Work boots, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn to provide foot and ankle support protection.
B.
Either long or short sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
C.
Long pants.
No shorts or cutoffs.
D.
Provided safety gear; hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the Department.
This position may be eligible for telework.
The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.
Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs.
Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises.
The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.
Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
