* The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board has an opening for an Engineering Geologist in the Forest Activities Unit.
This position is located at the Redding office at 364 Knollcrest Drive, Suite 205, Redding, CA 96002.
Duties: Essential duties will focus on water quality effects resulting from timberland/forestland management activities and use of best management practices.
Perform and evaluate technical and policy work within the Redding Unit of the Forest Activities Program (FAP).
Using reasonable and sound geologic principles, oversee the implementation of timberland management activities within the Redding area sub-region of the Central Valley Region.
Responsibilities include: 1) Serve as a liaison to numerous individual dischargers.
2) Perform technical assessment of plans and reports to evaluate projects implementing construction/reconstruction/maintenance and use of erosion controls related to roads and watercourse crossings for water quality protection.
3) Evaluate monitoring results and water quality data to assess timberland management practices for potential water quality degradation resulting from activities.
4) Evaluate effectiveness of management practice implementation including potential for negative cumulative effects.
5) Conduct environmental and geologic investigations of timberland management activities and operations to evaluate compliance with the California Water Code and Water Boards’ plans and policies, including Waste Discharge Requirements and Monitoring and Reporting Program requirements.
The candidate will review proposed timber harvest activities including timber harvest plans, timber emergencies, exemptions, conversions, post-fire salvage and vegetation management projects.
Review technical reports for potential impacts to surface waters from erosion.
Conduct inspections to evaluate field conditions/compliance of timber harvest activities and other forestland uses.
Evaluate management methods and erosion potential of areas to be disturbed, road building and watercourse crossing installation.
Evaluation includes that of potential sediment production, hillslope stability, and mass soil movement as well as runoff and erosion control for roads and watercourse crossings.
*Duties:* Under the close supervision of the Senior Engineering Geologist and consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments.
The incumbent will manage regulatory oversight of investigation and remediation projects, perform geologic, and other technical work, and implement State environmental laws and programs related to the Water Boards’ Site Cleanup program.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to: reviewing geology work plans, reports, and cleanup proposals; evaluating hydrological data, groundwater monitoring plans, well designs, and environmental data (soil, soil gas, water, sediment, indoor air) to assure adequate definition of the nature and extent of contamination and to ascertain compliance with the Water Board’s cleanup goals; providing geologic input to work plans, reports, and cleanup proposals; preparing correspondence and enforcement orders directing investigations and cleanup consistent with Water Board policies and regulations; and prioritizing case load to support annual work plan commitments.
