SUMMARY
The South Campus Groundskeeper, under the supervision of the Horticulture Manager and Lead Gardener & Lead Groundskeeper Bridge/South Campus is primarily responsible for the day-to-day care of the Turtle Bay Grounds, Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge landscape and assistance with Sundial Bridge environs as needed.
Along with the other Horticulture staff members, the South Campus Groundskeeper will be asked to work on the exciting annual holiday light show in the Botanical Gardens, ‘Garden of Lights’ for logistics pertaining to the interactions between light show elements and plants and hardscaping (i.
e.
pruning or moving plants for the light show elements as needed; moving pathways or irrigation if needed, etc.
).
This position will assist with other ‘Garden of Lights’ elements as needed (help as needed with installation of light show elements and work some nights of light show during the limited time it is open, as needed).
Groundskeepers may also participate in the logistical implementation of museum-sponsored programs, tours, events, and classes.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Maintain hardscaping and landscaping at an acceptable level of excellence.
Maintain structural hardscaping within specific limits.
Assist with the installation of new plantings and irrigation.
Maintain existing irrigation system.
May be asked to carry out, in conjunction with other ‘Garden of Lights’ light show team members, plant and hardscaping elements for the annual holiday light show (i.
e.
pruning or moving plants for the show as needed; moving pathways or irrigation if needed, etc.
).
Assist with other ‘Garden of Lights’ elements as needed (help as needed with installation of light show elements and work some nights of light show during the limited time it is open, as needed).
Operate maintenance equipment, when necessary and maintain tools.
Alert supervisor to new or existing horticultural maintenance or supply needs.
After appropriate training, or with qualified applicator’s license, apply pesticide and record use of, with knowledge and consensus of Horticulture Manager and/or Senior Horticulturist.
Maintain a continuous awareness and knowledge of safe work practices.
Carry out all work duties in compliance with safety rules.
Assist visitors in a friendly, professional manner.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE One-year experience in horticulture and/or site-maintenance or related fields or a combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of commercial landscape design, construction, maintenance, irrigation systems and nursery operations.
Familiarity with native plants of the region and knowledge of appropriate horticultural practices, landscaping principles and ornamental horticulture; turf maintenance; pesticide application and safe work practices.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, planning, and communication skills.
Ability to interact effectively with the public: adults, children, volunteers, docents, teachers, parents, coworkers, and management.
Ability to use sound judgment and work independently or with direct supervision.
Ability to drive a vehicle and willingness to learn any necessary heavy equipment operation.
Employment contingent on passing a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
Possess a valid California driver’s license or be able to acquire within (10) ten days.
Provide a clean DMV report if requested.
